Simply asking the potential co-applicant some questions about their rental/credit history can save you money in application fees, if their answers are not satisfactory. You might ask them to log into their credit karma (any credit monitoring site will do) and show you their credit score. A printout of local criminal records can usually be obtained at your county courthouse for a minimal fee. Also, there are legitimate services that will do a nationwide court records search. Spending a little money now may save you a lot in the larger picture.
